I ran in to this prob last year. My block only had the diagonal holes. I ended up having to drill and tap the hole so I could put the straight pattern starter on.

I'm not sure about this, but isn't a Small block Chevy 400 the one with straight holes and the 350 blocks have all three holes.
We had to buy a starter for a sbc 400 for this reason, it cost a lot more. It will work on both blocks though.
The next time we build a 400, the machine shop is going to drill and tap the third hole for us.
Hope this helps
Good luck this year

The 400 only has the diag. holes. I ran into this when I tried to use a 153 flywheel on a 400. The small starter wouldn't work.

Check out Pace Performance. They have the OEM small, high torque starter for the vortec and I think it is drilled for both patterns and both 153 and 168 teeth. www.paceparts.com

Mystery continues -

My 400 has straight holes as did my 350 before it.

From my messing with derby cars, I believe a 305 has the diagonal holes.

for any one else the nastra # is 3567 i believe it was used on 80's camaro but most competent parts stores should be able to cross the nastra #.
