97 your question has provoked much thought.. A MoPar is a slang term for a any Chrysler built vehicle. A SloPar would have to be a Chrysler vehicle with a GM engine.

Hey 99 you hit the nail on the head, not only do Chrysler motors stink,so do their chassis, actually my first race car was a 78 dodge aspen, never did sort out that torsion bar front end, drove me crazy!also I own a 2000 dodge 3/4 ton truck, with the 24 valve cummins,I wouldn't trade It for 10 duramaxs!good luck with the mopar!Oh,I almost forgot the best thing about a dodge, the firing order!

Bemidji gave up NOPA I heard. I had thought of running down there but I have heard that it can be kinda tough on equipment. However, they say it gets dry slick and my 3,700# Mopar loves dry tracks! So I may try it anyway. Have you ever been to Hallock or Greenbush? Greenbush changed their track to a bull ring instead of a paper-clip shaped track and it is real nice! Hallock isn't a bull ring so much but it is a great track.

97 -I ran a 5th ave Crrysler with the bent t- bar setup (like an Aspen) and didn't have real great luck either. I run a straight bar car now and that is more forgiving. Some guys run real well with ath bent bars... My brother in law runs a bent bar and led 14 laps of a 15 lap feature his 1 st night out. The only reason he didn't win is he got stuffed into the wall.

unfortunately it's not currently running. the car was way loose at practice and the suspension felt like my grandma's cadillac. we took a look at the springs and shocks - all stock. bought the car last year not knowing a thing about racing. i've now learned i was idiot for trying to run it with stock shocks. got the racing shocks now, but i'm waiting on new bushings for the front leaf spring mount. the old ones were completely rotted out. as you know, it can be tough finding some of the replacement stuff for the mopars.
we're hoping to have it ready within the week. hopefully we can get it on the track so i have a chance to learn to drive!

hi yall, we have exactly the same car as "finally". a 1980 dodge mirada. we are in southern california and used to run at cajon speedway which is now closed. it was a 3/8ths paved. now this year we are gona run on a 1/4 dirt. its our first time on dirt and our first race is on the 14th. there is only one other dodge running out here in san diego so i dont have much help with setup and tuning. it is weird seeing finally's car because our car was painted yellow and orange with the same scheem. i'll attach a pic as soon as i find one.

found two!!

I have had pretty good luck with KYB gas adjust shocks on the Cordoba. Can you get real race shocks for the front of the Mirada? I can't seem to get them for mine. I use pro in the back. I had sugested Super Stock leafs for you on Moparchat but I think DWC was right ....they'd be too stiff for your car. They seem fine on mine I got mine for $75 too. I made them work!

Does any one know where to get torshon-bars that fit the 1980 dodge mirada. I think its a J, K, or M body and the bars go across the front. Posting here because its mopar spacific. Thanks in advance.

love the car! it's great to know there's some other folks racin the mirada. mine's an '80 also. are you running a 360? once I get it set-up and on the track, i'll let you know how we're running.

as far as the torsion bars, the mirada is a J body and my understanding is that it is essentially the same as and F and M body. that would include the Volare, Aspen, Diplomat, Grand Fury and Cordoba (probably a few others too). if i'm right, you could probably find some torsion bars off a diplomat pretty easily. a good place for info on mopar specific parts and set-ups is moparchat.com there's a circle track board and the guys there have been very helpful (including dirt_mopar99).

good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for the info. We have our first practice on thursday may 12th. I hope we car get a decent setup. Today we finished asembeling a 1990 360ci w/ roller cam. I port matched the ins and outs, bored, decked and did a valve job. We don't have many rules in our class but we do need to at least look stock. we are also getting a new paint job and vinal stickers. There is still alot to do before this weekend. I hope we run well for all the work we are putting into it. i will put up some more pics as soon as the paint is dry!

I think you may want to try the 'cop' t bars. If you can find an old Gran Fury... They are supposed to be heavier. And the price could be right. You may have already done this foe asphalt, but you will need to isolate the k-frame from the stub where they mount up. There is a rubber biscut (mmm just like mom made) between the 2 frames. Just back out the bolt and make a similar sized/depth piece out of a piece of metal or weld a stack of washers together. Doing this really firms up the front end.

unfortunately we haven't gotten the bushings we need. I ordered them from a middle man who still hasn't gotten them from the manufacturer...I guess this process can take a few weeks. I'm itching to get out there...already missed the first 4 races.

got a question for you...we finally figured out that we didn't have mirada springs - they're off a cuda. I had two extra leafs added to the right and one extra leaf added to the left. both were then de-arced (sp?). the spring guy thought that this would do a good job of planting both sides...i'm starting to second guess that thought process. would i be better off having the 2 leafs added spring on the left? or, more generally, how does added leafs effect the car?

thanks

I talked with a guy here in san diego that has a mopar junk yard. He says that ALL of the mopars with the L shaped torshon bars are all exactly the same spring rate. even the cop cars, the only difference being a heaver sway bar. So I gues I am stuck with what I have.

I was thinking about double shocking the right front. has anyone tried this? Has anyone used a airshock to compensate for lack or spring rate (front or rear)? I know some rules dont alow airshocks but our tech inspection dosen't even look under our cars.

I have heard that adding more leaf to the left is the way too. Also, if you can get an old leaf and cut it in 2 put one half in the front to help wind up. I'd have to say you'd want the RR softer. When mine is fast, you can feel it roll to the RR. I didn't know on the t bar rates, There is supposed to be larger diameters... at least according to the books I've seen. You might want to check out Moparchat.

Since there are no aftermarket selections availabe for cross-ways torsion bar cars, you're stuck having to find different means to even up the roll-couple. That means using the biggest sway bars available along with really good shocks. Carerra used to make a shock for the F bodies that was adjustable. Not sure if they still do, but it's worth a call.

I'm not a big fan of running sway bars on dirt, but that's exactly where you're going to have to go if you run a cross-ways bar car.

Another option is to cut off that front sub frame and weld in a B body set-up from the rear torsion anchors all the way up. It's not as hard as it sounds and very doubtful that any tech people will even know the difference if rules are a problem.

With the B body front sub you'll get a wide selection of aftermarket torsions, a stronger front end, better geometry, more engine set-back and less weight up-front as you'll need some rear percentage on dirt.

Just so you all know sparky540 is the driver of the factory stock #23 1980 dodge mirada. I am the crew chief of the same car. See atached pic in prevous post.

anyway... IT LIVES !! we got the motor running last night. So we have 2 days to figure out the rest of the setup.

As far as swaping out the front suspension to a b body.... we might as well just switch the whole car. We'll see how the f body runs this year then we will think about it.

You'll end up with a shorter wheelbase and an overall lighter car if you swap the B body front end into a two door Aspen, Volaire, or A body. You can find a lot of the B bodys in the yards in big station wagons, and long old heavy 4 doors. Sheet metal for 2 door B bodies is scarce and premium.

I know this is a dirt racing forum and I can only afford to ice race right no, but here are some pics of my mopar. It's a 78 Plymoth Fury Sport. It has been raced for the last 15yrs. I've had it for the last 3yrs. This car is so easy to drive and is very forgiving if I screw up. This car loves to go on the outside in the slush and snow. I throw it hard in the corner and it sticks.

I left the front set-up the way the guys I got it from had it set, but I did put different rear springs in. I have solid aluminum bushings in the front of the springs, that I made. Also I have traction bars on it(not slapper bars). I broke the right main leaf right behind the spring eye this year. I can't find any juck yards around here with any cars left.

I've won numurous heat races and 2 features simce I've had the car. And I've never finished below 4th in points with it.

So anyways it's nice to see some mopar cars still being raced.

we took our sway bar off a long time ago. the mirada has too many links in how the bar ataches to the frame so we pulled it. the car leans alot due to the soft springs but it hooks up real well in the corner. looks like the car is going to role over on its side but we can pass anybody we want in the corner. now keeping the lead and pulling them in the strait is another issue.

...forgot to mention we got the car running and painted. first race = dnf. major rich carb. and blown alternator. we will get them next time.
