Does anyone Not lock out the dist? What is the advantage of locking it out?

there are prob as many that do it one way as the other. Especially in the hobby or street stock classes. Go up to mods, and especially late models and I would say most are locked out. We have run it locked for years and in fact I cant think of a reason not to lock it up personally.
By locking it you take away any mechanical advance inside the distributor which means no weights, no moving parts no springs etc. When you set the timing at 34 it is 34 no matter what rpm. You dont have to worry about whether your weights are free, whether you have the right springs, whether a spring is about to let go, etc. which could affect your timing, tear up your distributor, or cause engine damage.

Craig, here is the secret. When you run the Nationals this year, I will set your timing for you. I like to run a locked dist. at 10 degrees total advance and unlocked, I start by retarding it 22 degrees. It make for REALLY GOOD TRACTION! Under normal conditions...when I am not there, these numbers are no good.

Really now, the locked is supposed to be more accurate and easier to set timing. Bad thing is it is tough on starters and power valves when trying to start a warm motor with 36 degrees of timing. I always have mine locked because I believe in the onld addage, "less moving parts means less thing to break or go wrong". I think as many people run locked there are just as many running unlocked. Pure preferance.

Can't wait to see you guys. Planning on making that 10 hour tow here in a few weeks for a practive run. What gears are you guys ending up with the new configuration?

I know, 6:00 right?

I have never run a locked dist....With the bone stock motors i need to get the advance to get threw the turns... LOL . But really i have never run it locked even after people have told me to... Killing the starter was not a great idea for me. Now after readyt tons and i have burned up 2 motors in the past 4 years from what i think had to do with timing. I also run allot warmer at idle than most people not matter what i do,fan,ran,shrroud...its allways warms up fast. I just got done locking out my new dist and plan on running it...maybe i will like it


Mark 10 hour drive?? I have made it to there in 8 hours from my house and i live 1 1/2 hours from the track???? I couldnt tell ya on what gear we have only been on it one time and that was last Sat and the track was less than disirable and i was on the G60s so it wouldnt help ya. I can tell ya the track is bigger and looks like it will keep the speed up threw the corners.....but ya a 6.00 would be a great place to start he he We wont be there for the first 2 races so if you head up after that stop by and say hi

I have a 406 with 36deg locked in. Bought new MSD Distributor and box, redone all wiring because MSD tech said we had interference. We set the timing at 36 at idle and the more you rev the motor the timing starts retarding. Ends up aroung 20 deg at 3000 RPM. We have checked everything. Pulled the timing chain cover off tonight and cam button looks good. I am out of ideas anyone have anything else to try would be appreciated. It is a roller cam.

12MODRACER what kind of balancer is it maybe just the rubber flexing and allowing the ring to retard?

Tried that today bought a new silicone dampner. Timing is at 36 deg idle and is retarding to 20 deg at 4000 RPM. I am about to pull my hair out with this thing. Thanks for the thought.

I will take a stab here and say that the light cant keep up with the rpm of the motor?? I know that if i crack the throttle real fast it will retard then catch up with it!!

I think your pick up leads are crossed. try switching the polarity on the pick wires see if that makes a diff. the proper polarity is the one that has the timing retarded the most.Hope this helps. Josh K. The wires I am refering to are the dist. to MSD box wires.

Thanks guys but i have came to the conclusion the cam is walking. Tried a MSD timing light and swithched around the wires and still the same. Trying to figure out how to keep it from walking. Thanks for input.
