Vortec heads came out in '95, mostly trucks, but some vans, too. I don't know if they put 'em in any cars. Look for these last three casting numbers; 062 and 906. Anything else is not a 5.7 Vortec head.

Tilley is right. A lot of people confuse the early 90's TBI heads,(trucks, caprice etc.) with vortec's. They are not.Easiest wat to tell a true vortec is that they only have (8) 5/16 intake bolts instead of (12) 3/8 like the older small blocks, the pair in the center of ea side is gone. The only true Vortec heads are the numbers he listed and came out in i think late late 95-98 trucks. You can also buy them over the counter from a GM dealer, bare or stock replacement ready to bolt on.

the vortec heads also came on the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks up till 2001 when the new body style HDs came out. they were also on 1 ton vans till 2003.

Vortecs also have a very distinct pattern on the front of the head. Once you see one you'll pretty much know it's a Vortec without checking the numbers. The Caprice motor mentioned above is a very stout motor but the heads are not Vortecs and are sensitive to heat. Bottom end is AWESOME though!
