Range, I ran my street stock with just the GM HEI setup with the distributor welded and shimmed for (3) years without any problems. I turned all my engines 6800 all season without an iginition hickup. I replaced the pickup unit and coil at the start of each season and that was about it. I went to the 6AL in both my mods due to the rev limiter and the higher performance engines. Have not had a problem in either car as of yet. Since it's the street stock class and you're trying to conserve, I'd run what you have for now. Just my 2 pennies.

Get a GOOD coil (like the MSD unit) and the MSD pickup (I have seen them for $40) and the preformance is up to par with an MSD. I have run one like this in a mod for 3 years and had no problems. As for the MSD box, I ran one on a LLM and a mod for 5 years, I got a little worried about the age so I replaced it. I put the box in my pickup when it was new in 1994, it now has been in the truck 10 years and 180,000 miles without a single problem.
