I have a 355 on methanol that won't stay at an idle. The idle goes up and down about 500 rpm's. changed carbs and it still does it. Rev it up and it takes it a liitle while to come back down to around idle. What could this be?

I agree with chomme. Using a little benzo-matic propane torch works nicely also. But, worse case scenario is that you might also be sucking the air from inside the lifter valley if you don't notice any change in RPM while searching on top. Sounds like a major vacuum leak.

If it won't idle it sounds like you've probably got a vaccum leak or maybe a passage is plugged up and fuel isn't getting sprayed in good. I would just get a rebuild kit and change out all those gaskets and have at it with some carb cleaner and fire some compressed air in the holes.
