When you push the rod through the rocker that means the rocker stopped moving but the lifter kept lifting..... I would look up the exhaust port, see what the valve looks like and make sure the guide is still in place...... sounds like it might have stuck a valve in the guide when that happens it will not allow the valve to open so some thing has to break......and if you do manage to push the valve open it will stay open until the piston hits the valve, that is what will close the valve.

How much lift? Springs may collaped all the way.

valves are fine springs are fine, i talked to the guy that does my engines today when i dropped the parts off to have him order me new stuff. he said that he has seen a couple of the smallblock DIRT mods do the same thing. i was thinking that the stud on the exhaust side broke first and then with the exhaust not opening anymore the pressure builds up and the weak link in the chain the rocker arm on the intake side breaks. i suggested this to him and he said that that is what they think happened. he also said to stop running diff tracks with the wrong gears and pushing the rpms up there.lol
