Okay I am working on a friends Chevy truck and found some timing questions that have me thinking duh whut?!?!?
He got this engine from a friend who has a friend that built the engine and ran it for ??3000 miles?? Or something like that. Any way the Rock sucker carb needed some attention and since I race and kinda admire the async carbs I adjusted the choke and made a few “minor” modifications to help him out. Now I blather about that to ask this – I check the timing and found it to be set at about 62 degrees.
I have a Innova dial light and thought it was the problem. So I go over to momma’s van while she wasn’t looking to check ( she gets nervous when I poke at her mini van. I want so bad to stuff a V8 in it! Heheh)
The light is working fine. So I set the tining by ear and drove it around. Tuned it to eliminate the ping and checked the timing again. It wound up at 55 degrees.
Whew –
SO I was wondering. How much is one tooth on the timing chain worth??
Is there a timing issue here??

Na I just went out and did a rough TDC check and it came up to zero.

There is Airconditioner in the way or I would check maybe when the valve is moving or ?? something.

If this thang was to jump a tooth would it even run??

I am not too familiar with all of the performance cams but surely none would be set at 55 deg????

vacuum advance hose still connected to the distributor when you check the timing?

I just went thru the same thing, engine would not run with less than 40 degrees timing at idle, turned out the module was bad.You don't have a computer controlled dist do you?...that will do what you described.

Well this is pretty much your shade tree basic set up.
Stock ignition I did not check the Mechanical advances but I saw it working with RPM
Yes disconnected the vaccum advance but even that would not give that much advance.

If say when the engine was put together and was off one tooth to the retard side. Would it run or what would I expect?
I just can't seem to work it out in my head.
