I built a 355 for a guy, He bought a dist from Advance auto parts. The motor started missing, not running right. Guy pulled the dist and found gear on cam and dist torn up. He found that the shaft was bent. The metal tore up the motor. Buying from junk auto parts stores isnt always cheaper!!

Does the shaft turn smooth in the distrabuter? .002" isnt much. You could assemble the dist. with out the gear and check run out where the gear would be.

Try replacing the gear with a new one and check the engagement pattern on the teeth. You should be fine.
