does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep some of the oil from the top end on a sbc with hydraulic lifters and stock pump. its running out from the valve covers at high rpm,s even with new gaskets...I was told to put pipe cleaners in the pushrods but i'm not sure about that either

sounds like you need some better breathers and need to open up the oil holes in the heads a little bit

Second above and relieve the return holes in the block.

I've also found putting a little piece of folded up screen inside the breather stops about 75% of the oil from coming out of mine.

I wish I would have thought of opening up the return holes before i put the motor together. I have a mr. gasket breather that fits in the top of each valve cover but they line up with the pushrod so it squirts oil right at them, but right now i've got so much oil coming out if the pushrods that if I was to run the motor without the valve covers it sprays oil about 6-8 feet from the car in a steady stream. any opinnion about the pipe cleaners? thanks for the advice

I have been havin that prob and as was suggested to me havent done it yet but - remove breathers and run a hose from 1 to other this allows it to breath and the oil wont leak any ideas on this 1 guys ???

get rid of those junk breathers and covers and spend $35 for a set of tall covers with two breathers your not getting enough ventalation with those little push in suckers. and if you have a breather on the right side it's gonna leak you need to just run 2 on the left side and a solid cover on the right

Spend the extra few bucks and get the alu. ones they hold up 10 times better.

If you've got a straight shot out the valvecover there is most of your problem - you need to have it baffled - a small square plate with the corners folded down and then tack-welded inside the valvecover will work - it'll allow the oil to flow into the engine when filling but not allow oil to be squirted / splashed directly out.

Or a cheap set of $25 valvecovers and possibly a pair of those oil directors that bolt on top of the rocker arm studs and direct the oil spray / splashing back down to the rocker fulcrums.
