I just locked every advance mechanism my dist has. The prob is at idle it is set at 36. At about 3500 I have 33 & at 5500 I have 32 What the heck would cause this? The timing chain is a Cloyes true roller 2 races old. The dist gear looks good.

I always set mine 34 total at 3500. Timing will change as r's go up.

how old are your coil and modual they can fall off and make the line bounce at higher rpm's

Most commonly it's the cam walking forward in the block. Make sure you have a positive stop (i.e. cam button and a stop outside the timing cover, generally from the water pump). This is about the only thing that will make ignition timing retard. The other thing would be a faulty ignition box, or if you have a HEI many modules will do this.

I run an hei with accel mod & coil. I do have a cam button with no stop on the wp. The timing is not jumping, it just moves lower real steady. I also have an alt putting out 14.2v.
Steve when you said some moduals do that did you mean it was normal or they are bad? It never misses,cuts out or pops. I had a prob with it jumping around is why I locked it. The shaft was removed when I welded it. Will end play on the shaft cause this? How much end play do you need?
