I am afraid the thing will blow the oil filter off and cause a fire. any suggestions

On a Small Block Chevy the Stock oil system is enough for any performance engine. We run a melling pump for racing but is STD pressure and volume and have never had an oil related problem. Is your pressure Bypass in the filter adapter plugged? If not the pressure may be higher that what you are seeing on the guage.

no its not but I am worried it will strip out the dist gear or blow out the filter. do you think it would help to run some lighter vis oil?

You sure need them!!! You'll pump the top end full of oil and the crank will starve. Use synthetic!!!!!

Old wives tale.

Assuming the return passages in the lifter valley have been addressed, you'll never pump the pan dry. The holes in the lifters, rockers and pushrods regulate the oil on their own. If you pump the pan dry, you have other issues. Restrictors will just make parts wear out quicker.
