I have had 2 dist. gears strip out in 6 weeks. Nothing new about any of the part IE the cams the same and sist the same. They both stripped out at lower rpms or idle. Just wondering if anyone can help. thanks

oil pump could cause it also worn out cam bearings will let the cam walk and if it's not at the proper depth the teeth don't mesh right and that could cause it to skip and eat the teeth off

I'd definitely be looking for camshaft walk. Your not trying to run a stock gear on a roller cam are you?

Racer17, Elaborate more on what you said please. Rookie here. Also should I shim the dist. up.

Julia, PLease explain, I think I have a stock gear, but not sure what cam is in there. It just started doing it in the last month. Motor is a year old with never any problems until now.

A ROLLER CAM NEEDS A BRONZE GEAR
AS FAR AS SHIMS GO, YOU NEED TO SEE WHERE THE GEARS ARE MESHING(WEAR MARKINGS ON GEARS)
IS DIST. SHAFT BENT?

Dist. shaft isnt bent but might need to shim it alittle. There is alot of play in the Oil pump shaft and a little in the dist. when it is all the way down in. If I lift up in it a little it takes the play out so It might need shimmed.

I have seen this problem several times, ussally in engines using a stock HEI distribitor that has been shimed to remove excessive shaft endplay. Also the block had been aligned bored reducing oil pump shaft end cleance. I start buy installing dist into block with no gasket if the dist. will bottom out touching intake manifold. Solve this problem by either moving adjustable slip ring or installing two dist gaskets. Actual problem is insufficicent oilpump shaft endplay clearance.
Good Luck

Hom much play should you have in the dist. shaft. If I shim the gear to take some of that play out and use multiple gaskets am I on the right track. Am I too far down towards the oil pump and need to move it up towards the top?

last one i had do this it was the oil pump and it was new,put a screwdriver in the shaft and turn the pump by hand,if it has any catches in it that may be the problem.

I would say its a oil pump play problem. Use an old distributor shaft and gear to discover your correct height. If you have alot of deck and head width taken down you will affect this also.
