if I set my timing using a vacuum advance with a rev kit with 1000- 3000 rpm springs at 12 degrees on a sbc and then plug in the vacuum line and rev up the motor the timing goes to 48 degrees. is this common? I'm trying to achieve a couple of inches more vacuum to get legal and this workes but I usually run a locked dist set at 32 deg. something just does'nt seem right thanks

Yes this is very common. You need to limit the advance mechanism at the point you require. Put you a stop on it. 1-3 spring set should work just limit the upperend limit with the stop.
