Intake leak can cause a lean cylinder. How do the plugs look?

might be chasing the wrong problem? have u checked your ignition system?

if it burned through the center of the piston i'd be more worried about detination. seems like the sbcs like to detonate on # 5 first. what kind of fuel and compression are you running?

If the engine is just melting down *(and yes it will start usually with number 5 on chevy) I would agree with the emulsion tube problem. What do all the plugs look like? I'll bet you when I put it together this time I would get a pyrometer and after short run I would check EGT's on each header tube!! How long is it taking it to melt down?

EGT is on number 3 and it read 1100, i dont think ignition because the 406 doesnt burn down. and it has been ran many times with no problem, it has sportsman 2 heads.
