Could be a number of things
Low Volume Pump
Thin Oil
Bearing Clearances loose
not enough oil

put a stiffer pressure relief spring in the pump. If you bought a HP pump it should have come with one; however if your clearances are too much, the bearings will eventually fail. Also make sure there IS clearance between the pickup and bottom of the pan.

pull the timing cover and check the three soft plugs around the camshaft,

I had a fit when I found a hole in one of the plugs you mentioned. After 3 weeks of no more than 20 lbs oil pressure I stumbled on this.

since no one has mentioned have u checked the gauge and the oil line.also the pressure bypass above the filter could be stickin.had the same problem pulled the motor checked all bearings then pulled the pump apart and found out it was the pump.

HAMMER,

IS THERE REALLY ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE M55A-Z28 PUMP(HIGH PRESSURE/STOCK VOLUME) AND A STOCK PUMP WITH THE HIGH PRESSURE SPRING?...
I NORMALLY RUN A STOCK VOLUME PUMP WITH THE HIGH PRESSURE SPRING BUT HAVE READ A LITTLE ON THIS FORUM ABOUT THE HIGH PRESSURE AFFECTING THE BEARINGS....
JUST PICKED UP MY SHORTBLOCK AND NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT THE OIL PUMP..(7 QUART CLAIMER PAN,NO RESTRICTORS,SOLID CAM)...THANKS, DOUBLE BARREL

check the clearance between the pickup and the bottom of the pan. a guy here just went through a brand new motor to find the Morroso pan/pickup matched set was not to matched. should be 1/4 clearance without pan gasket.

My oil preasure had droped about 5 lb from what I normaly run ,so I decided to take a look at the bottom end to inspect for bearing wear ....all looked good but since I was down there I decided to put in a new pump from napa put all back togeather and guess what no preasure ! took all back apart again and since time was an issue reinstalled old pump ......good preasure and off to the races we went ......Its very agrivating when you expect new parts to perform as they are supposed to and they dont....I still have the new pump and have yet to inspect it but I suspect the preasure bypass is stuck open.....good luck.
