When setting valves cold on a steel block and heads do you set them .002 tighter or looser than the hot lash setting? Cant remember off the top of my head.

I set them a little looser to leave room for expansion.

We will usually set them .004" tight on all steel engines. Just make sure you set them again when the engine is hot.

Okie11m, when the engine heats up everything expands, and the lash becomes loose. Be sure to re check your lash if your starting out with more lash than the cam card recommends. You'll be way.....too loose on lash if you don't.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was always told that the heat would tighten the gap from the expansion of the metal valves, rockers etc. Is it actually the head expanding & moving the rocker away from the pushrod?
Sorry about the false info dirtbuster!

Yes it's not only the head but the block growing as well. This is very obvious on our all aluminum engines. We can set valve lash at .018" hot, and when the engine cools to room temp we will have zero lash. Kind of a trip how much thing's actually expand and move around.

Thanks, I thought it was tighter on a cold engine but just second guessed myself out of it.

Steve, I had a question come up the other day that I thought you would be able to help me with. How much difference in degrees of duration will it make by tightening or loosening the lash by .001 or .002 from the cam card.

How do you know if you get it to tight, the lash that is.

Too tight and the valve wont close completely and you wont get very good compression.
