I have seen some cars that run a dash light that stays off until the engine dies then comes on when it quits running. Does anyone know how to wire this up??

It is probably the oil pressure lite.

Ok......what am I missing here? I have reread this post like 5 times. Do you really need a light to know when your engine is dead?

what they are actually is a low oil pressure light, runs off a 9v battery or if you use a standard style ignition system you can just rob the 12v from there.. If at some point while you are racing you lose oil pressure the light will kick on possibly saving catastrophic damage. There is an adjustable style and also a 20 psi and under, etc... uses a standard pressure sending unit, a T in the oil pressure line, and a 9-12 volt source.. Thats it. That reminds me, I need to get the sender unit...

if you get the oil filter knocked off that light will not go off.

No oil pressure, light is on! No oil filter, no oil pressure!

I have my gauges in the dash so that the needles all point up when temps and pressures are where I want them so that at a glance I can tell if oil pressure is low or water too hot. Can't change gears during a race so just read telltale tach at end of race or rotate tach so 7 or 8 is straight up.

Same here. This is a great setup. I also have a low oil pressure light that comes on at 20 psi.
