Every time I have a block done they ask me what rings I will use to determine the finish.

It's done by the type of ring.

- Moly rings like at least a 400 grit finish (Sunnen 825 stone I believe) Some shops use plateau stones to further smooth the finish.

- Cast rings require a slightly more coarse finish to seat properly. Usually a 280 or 320 grit (Sunnen 620).

- Chrome rings require a very coarse finish (150 - 180 grit, Sunnen 528?) and a long period of time to seat. These are only used in heavy equipment where significant dirt will enter the engine.
