What's the proper procedure to retorque heads after you've warmed up an engine for the first time?

In the past I'm always just checked the torque on all the head bolts, but I've read (somewhere) that your supposed to back off the bolts 1/2 turn, then retorque? Do you back them off one-at-a-time? Do you step the torque back up or go 100% all at once?

Thanks.

Just do one at a time and back them off1/4 turn or so and then torque backup to spec. then move on to the next.

Just like dirtbuster said, and make sure the engine is cold.
