you should measure the endplay but it's not something you can adjust, 1.tighten the main thrust bearing(rear main on a chevy) to just snug 2. pry the crank to the rear or hit with a deadblow hammer towards the rear 3. now pry or hit it back towards the front of the block 4. use a feeler gauge between the thrust surfaces of the bearing and the crank to find endplay, if it's out of spec there's something wrong with the crank.

You can get bearings with different thicknesses of thrust face.
