i have a 355 small block..running on a 5/8 mile track. i have the following cam. Comp cam.
hydraulic cam 3000 stall, headers, gears, 9.5:1 CR, very rough idle.
RPM Operating Range: 2500 to 6500*
Duration: In.= 292 Ex.= 292*
Valve Lift: In.=.501 Ex.=.501*
Lobe Seperation: 110 Degree*

Does this seem like a decent cam for this size track? what would be a good gear to run(gm 10 bolt rear)?

your gonna need to run a 3.42 ratio in rear end this with around 85" roll out on rear tires will give you around 5900. im not a big fan of stall converters especially that high on starts u may be lower than 3000 depending on the guy pacing the feild and what gear u decide to start in. also i like to have the angine slow me down as much as i can the less brake u can use less chance of sliding a front wheel. id think a stock or a hair over just for moving around in pits would slow u better even though youll be above 3000 goin in. also stahl conv make more heat. as for cam itll be a good starting point i reccomend a good timing chain set and degree the cam or have someone else do it if for no other reason youll know exactly were your starting at and were u can go with it. to tune power

what auto tranny are you running and whats the roll out of the rear tires . cam wise that look alright but i'm gonna agree with dan stall converters are for launching a drag car not circle track most times on restarts here we are running 1200-2500 so you would be at a big disadvantage there

good go with the 342 gear the auto trans has a 152 second gear.run 2nd a stock converter will be about 800 stahl itll be fine for moving around and trailering the car esp if u let it warm up as u shuold. that cams gonna want to idle over 1000 i run 292 adv duration as well and am ok with stock converter. if your gonna max out at 6000 id run a hair less duration cam. and if running stock manifolds get the exhaust duration a few degrees longer with dual 2-1/4 pipes atleast. but that cam can work for now then learn your set up rpm readings and call and get one made for u

you might wan to try a 3.23 did i mention i have a 3.23 r/p for sale lol
why do you only want ot turn 5900 when the cam is for 6500 max?

17j, how much for the gear? 5900 is because with the gears i currently have and the set up thats what it would be running about... what would the 3.23 come out to? what would the roll out need to be on the tires?

3.23 in second comes out to a 490 you would probably get 6-6200 with that and say a 83-85 in tire

like i said earlier with the auto in second and an 85" tire your gonna be close to 5900 the 3.23 is gonna knock rpm down not up to prob5600 range with same tires.

373 will put you close maybe a hair less but 411 would be too much as for the final drive ratio i dont have the info in front of me ill look for it

you take your tranny gear which is 2.52 in 1st and 1.52 in 2nd times your rear end gear. on our 1/2 mile i run a 3.73 comes out to be a 5.67 with 80 in roll turns right around 6500 with the longer track and the taller tires that might work for you i have one of those for sale too lol what are you going to run for rear tire roll all these figures are a shot in the dark without knowing just what that messurement is btw i want 50 for 3.23 r/p and 100 for the 3.73 carrier and all plus shipping of coarse
