Author Topic:   Mallory Uni-lite distributor problem
posted January 02, 2004 07:25 PM
I have recently built a 71' 351W motor, mild cam ,after market crank, 9.5- 1 pistons, with a Mallory uni-lite distributor. The problem I keep having is the roll pin that holds the gear on the distributor shaft keeps breaking. The first time this happened the distributor was hard to turn by hand. I seem to have remedied that problem by cleaning and lubricating the shaft. But it has done it again, except this time the distributor is turning freely. Has anyone else had this type of problem? If so how was it fixed.

what do you have the distributor end play set to? you should be in a range of
.015" - .020".

I had one of them in a street hot rod.It was the biggest peice of junk i have ever owned.Went to a MSD system and the car ran 100 % better.

The end play is right around .013 . I think I will just buy a MSD I seem to have better luck with them.I don't want to be on side of the road working on the truck to get to the track!

I recently witnessed the same problem with Matt Martin's fastruck. After the truck quit on Mark in a practice session we simply put a new roll pin in and finished the session. When we got it back to the shop we inspected all possible culprits and found nothing wrong, replaced everything including the oil pump just in case. A couple days later while making a pull on the chasis dyno the pin broke again. I simply replaced the roll pin with a much stronger piece and have had no trouble since.
