Without really getting into the motor, you could look at having a carb custom built for your application. Or try to reduce internal friction by running synthetic oil and going to a roller-rocker setup (if not already). If the HEI ignition is stock, they don't make good spark over 5,000 rpm. You might be able to pick up some upper range power by upgrading the ignition system. The compression of the motor should be a major factor in determining what type of fuel to use. If you're not running real high compression, high octane gas can lead to burnt exhaust valves.

Just some thoughts...

You could run the Hei as a trigger and hook up a digital MSD. On a level field with a crate rule, you probably will win more races working with the car than with the motor. JMO

Where do you run a UMP mod with 350hp at?

If you do go into the engine you can get alot more power out of it,i have a hotrod mag with the same engine that put out 459 horses with the stock shortblock and the only thing done to the heads was mods to the valve guides for more lift, maybe you could run a lift rule cam and not remove the heads but you definitely need to change the cam to see any real h.p. gain.

rico 08--- yea thats kinda what i thought , was just hoping there was something i was overlooking that i could do without getting inside the engine ,, wishful thinking i guess .
your right about the cam i can gain a little there without getting into the heads , might go that direction .
hey - what issue is that hot rod mag.? would like to check that out . Thanks
