Can anyone tell me what the output of a one wire alternator should be? Does it depend on the voltage of the battery? The voltage drops off to nothing checking on the post of the alternator with the battery unhooked.

Does the car die when you unhook the battery? If so it's bad(of course). They are a self exciting type but they need battery voltage on the terminal to work i beleive.

Norightturn - on one wire alternators there is no exciter plug. You should see battery voltage with the motor not running. And more with the motor running. Somewhere around 14.5 with motor running.

Thanks for the input Jay,thats what I wanted to know. I only show about 12.5 volts with it running, which is my battery voltage when it is shut off. I havent unhooked the battery to see if it dies yet. I've ran it all year and just recently started wondering about it. When I started having starter problems that I thought might be battery related.

If the car is idling it might not charge, so kick up the rpm a bit, especially with a big pulley, mine wont start charging till like 2200.
