I've got a set of expensive .040 over 1/16 rings and a set of .030 pistons, has anyone ever tried using a bigger oversize rings on a smaller set of pistons? This will be a budget motor so i'm trying to save a set of rings, they measure real close and i thought i could just file fit them but i'm not sure 'bout the oil ring.

I,ve done this for years, just file to get the proper ring gap.I did this because it was cheaper to buy a.010 over than to buy the
file to fit in the corect size.

Forgot to mention the oil expander will work just fine, set the gap on the scraper rings.

correct me if you must, but wouldent that cause alot more tension against the cilinder walls, creating more friction, more heat and loss of power. I have used reduced tension rings to gain power.

They are 1/16 rings so they don't have alot of tension anyway,i think it's just an end gap difference.
