Het Oknow this aint no race car but I have a 98 blazer with 4.3, and have a small problem, It seems that there is some oil mixing in the water I assume because it uses the orange antifreeze and when you take of the radiator cap it looks just like clay around the top. I see on the front of the intake that there is a oil leak. Could it be mixing oil in the water from that intake gasket failure on the front or what do Yall think. When I drive it for the first time every day the temp. goes up to like 230 and acts like the themostat is sticking cause the temp will suddenly fall back to 160 so fast you can watch the gauge go down so I removed thermostat and it still does that so I amm really comfused. But It only does that the first time then it runs normal temps? Any suggestions.

from my experiences as a machinist cracks will usually close when the engine is cold and open when it warms up. sounds like you could have air in the system .

oil can get in the water from the trans cooler and the eng oil cooler if you have one most gm trucks have eng. oil coolers in the radiator.I guess you could have a crack some other place but with the getting hot right away sounds like you might have a cracked head or head gasket problem.Intake gasket leaks go in the motor and mix with oil or leak externally.Have you put any green anti-freeze in with the dex cool cause it will turn darker.Has any work been done on the motor ,alot of people put intake gaskets on wrong blocking the passages in the front for cooling which makes run hot. what does your oil look like?

oil looks good, no green antifreeze and engine has never been touched other than a water pump a year or two ago, I can see where there is a oil leak at the front driver side of intake but is there a way for watet to mix with oil there. I still confused why it builds up to 230 or so and then falls and after that first time it runs 160 all the time

You need to verify your guage is working right .If you know any one who has a scanner you can see if your temps agree with each other. There is a kit to check and see if there is exhaust gas in your coolant. It sounds like head gasket leak .Alot of the parts stores carry these or can get them.
