we run a motorcraft 2 barrel one night car made a pop sound and then ran fine the next week it took 6 gallons in heat race rebuilt carb loads up at idle

It sounds like you're backfired and ruptured the power valve diaphragm. I'd try installing a new power valve, which should fix things.

there is no power valve its been removed

In that case, if the float is brass you might check to see if there's fuel in it. A backfire can split the seam of a float and allow fuel to seep inside, at which point it won't be a float anymore.
