We use the 1034 on most applications . Cometic also makes some very good head gaskets that we are switching to .

if you're burning through #3 and #5, you're either running too lean, or you are pre-detoating. Ask a performance shop to verify me, but that is what i was always told when i had the same problem. Since then a 1060 has worked just fine.

due to the nature of mass produced blocks and mass produced head gaskets the likely hood of some miss alignment is high.
we have found that if you use a stud kit you will need to:
remove locating dowels from deck (block).

place the gasket on the block first and then screw the studs in (ie through the gasket). don't try to screw all the studs in and then slide the gasket over... we did this and had the gasket ride up the stud shank slightly when we pulled the down, which led to a leak that cuased a major melt down.

we have switched to copper gaskets too, i think they are by SCE (but i'm not sure)

For the 400 blocks with steamholes, we've ALWAYS used a Felpro 1014. NEVER had an issue. Never heard of an issue. We know of lots of people that use less expensive head gaskets, but most come back to the 1014. They are high ($32 ea.) in Summit, but they are the best.
