Me and KP have been trying to figure this one out for a few days now, my car stalls as soon as I put it in gear, it doesn't matter what rpm it's set at either. I've had different carbs on, it idles fine in park with 10Hg of vacuum, can't find any leaks between the fuel cell to the carb(haven't replace fuel pump though which is mechanical) It's a 355 with 10.5 to 1 compression with a .552 lift Midwest cam, valve lash doesn't vary between one adjusting to another. Anyone have any ideas?

what happens if the rear wheels are up on jack stands and you put it in gear? Does it still stall?

If your timing is too low at idle it will stall.
Try locking out your distributor at full advance ,It worked for me.

I think it may be converter, distributor is locked at 36, and it doesn't matter what rpm its at either.

Big cam + low (relatively) comp + stock covertor = stalling everytime. Trying goosing it a little right as it goes in gear and see if it stays running. I run a 10.3:1, .534" lift 355 with a PG and 2800-3000 stall circletrack convertor. It idles fine, but drops from 1100 to 800 or so and sounds choppy.

You may have bad torque converter. If the stator locks up in T/C,the motor will not idle because it has no stall.

It wound up being the converter, but now when i upshift to 2nd gear, it wont come back down into first. I dont know much on trannys, is it modulator valve? Any ideas?

You're mod.valve should not have any vaccum to it for racing. This sounds like you have a governor problem. Some 400's have alow gear lockout built into the valvebody.I would suggest that you get a manuel valvebody.

I had to run vacuum to it, because it wouldn't shift out of 1st gear. Before I switched converters, I had no problems with shifting from 2nd to 1st on restarts, but now it won't. I turned it upside down with some fluid still in it(not much, I drained it before I pulled it out) to change the pan gasket that had been leaking, besides that, the only thing I changed was the converter.
