A friend of mine showed me a trick take your plugs and hit them with a torch and heat them up. Burning off all the old stuff on them. Will also help in diagnosing your problem as they will be clean when they go in.

its hard to clean plugs once they've been loaded up. best thing to do is buy a new set and start fresh. i had the same problem for the first month this year. maybe go one step hotter on the plugs will help too.

i agree with new plugs, but your method of one step at a time is a good plan, Don't go lighter in color than a tan color on the plugs, if it starts to go white in spots, that's your bottom line, step up one spot, and let her go, you've found your happy spot. Just be sure not to go too far with the timing, and you will actually run a bit better going lean, especially coming out of the hole.
