Does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes a valve spring tall enough to hold a valve up but light enough to push down with your thumb. the reason I need it is to check piston to valve clearance more easily. I have heard of some guys using a blue oval (sorry cant say the f- word) 390 rocker shaft spring. Any truth to that?

i think what you want is one of the springs that come in a cam degreeing kit. contact the manufacture of the product im sure they must sell replacement parts. im sure i have seen them for sale some where to, just cant remember at the moment.

The hardware stores usually have a drawer of springs, just find the right length, dia. shouldn't matter that much.
