I was running motor at fast idle at night and noticed headers were glowing red.Just put motor in and am wondering if this is caused by motor running lean at idle or timming.

could be both, also check for intake leaks under manifold. common problem if not checked extremely carefully during assembly. very common if head faces or block decks have been machined

Could be your valves are not sealing against the head good enough. I had that problem at the beginning of the year on my brand new bowties.

I've seen this before and it turned out to be an idle jet part blocked, making mix too lean on idle. Went to my local garage and the guy there(a friend)put his 02 sensor thingy on the exhaust to make, too lean at idle.

Also, could be the fresh motor itself. If your machininst ground the clearances between the pistons and the cylinder walls tight, you will be getting a little extra drag, i've seen this as the cause of a little extra flame...
Personally, you can see a sliver of light past my pistons when they are cold..., when warm, engine loves it
