My car started missing at high RPM`s in the heat after about 5 laps it just quit. Pulled the distributor and the teeth were striped off the gear. Cam looks ok but am going to tear motor down to make sure. Question is did the oil pump cause this ? It is hard to turn with a ***** driver, and makes a clicking noise when turning it ?

Sounds like a very good place to start. When you get it tore down pull the plate off the pump and let us know what you find.....Towman

same thing happened to me last year. 99% sure you'll need an oil pump.

Unless it is a bronze distributor gear, chances are the camshaft gear is eaten up too. Check it carefully, up close.

I'd bet the pump ate something.

Got the motor apart oil pump looks fine ,cam is shot ! Engine builder is scratching his head? He checked the oil pump and the depth of the distributor everythings seems ok . Guess maybe a bad gear on the dis. ???? Anyway going to try a new distributor with brass gear and a new cam see what happens..

I have a buddy that just went through what you are describing. He ate up two cams and fours distributor gears before he found the problem. Ended up being the block, evidently the block had warped internally causing the cam to rotate out of round when running. Unfortunatlly an expensive fix.

If not running one already you should consider running a cam Button to prevent cam walk.
