Has anyone heard of a tach causing ignition to die off above a certain rpm. Like maybe there is a short or fault somewhere inside th tach causing problems with the ignnition module?

In 1980, I bought a brand new Z-28 Camaro, 350, HEI. In the first 6 months that I owned it, a problem in the tach(according to the dealer) killed the ignition module(or the coil, I don't remember). I DO remember being stranded! This happened twice. The first time it was gradual. Crank & crank in a.m., finally fired, died in afternoon. 2nd time, it just flat out died without warning. I don't know how relevant this is to your situation, but it does show a harmful relationship can exist between the 2 pieces.
