ok guys i need some help here, i run a 355 in a factory stock with a two barrel, 882 heads, .430 lift (.460 max). The problem is that i can't get the motor to run a complete race, it will run 220-230 for the first 10-12 laps then the temp starts climbing and won't stop thus the motor starts to drag and i start backpedaling, the radiator was just rodded and went through, and the water pump is good what could be causing this? its not the first time its happened a couple of mod drivers around here think its a head gasket could that be it? No signs of water in the oil but one thinks it could be blowing it out of the exhaust. Need some help, motor was rebuilt, 5 races ago.

A four core rad will help slow down the overheating,you could try jetting up a little and if you're running smog pulleys i'd try restricting the water flow,also try backing the timing down a little.

could be any number of things lack of air flow to radiator,shroud,pullies,timing,jets, but if that motor gets that hot shut it down 240 and i'm outta here and changing oil and head gaskets before next week. you keep running it that hot and you'll have a set of 882 door stops in a big hurry

882 heads are thin wall casting's , and notorious for cracking out of the intake and exhaust pockets , I'd have them magged .

ok guys here we go:
yes i have a good fan and a good shroud. I thought about the airflow and removed one of the screens from infront of the radiator. steve if they were cracked would it be able to run strong for a short period of time (pushing second place down the straight for 2 laps). We already backed the timing down before last week.
thanks for the advice 17j. I'll take that into consideration. Came from 7th to 3rd and then temp went uuuuuuupppppp and ran off the end while running fourth.

if your loosing water,i'd have the heads checked,i just went through this and the car ran fine.

do you have the spring in the lower radiator hose?

check to see if the radiator hose is collapsing when you come in hot.
