Author Topic:   H vs I beam rods
posted March 07, 2003 12:13 PM
I remember reading somewhere (but cant find it now) that I beam rods are actually stronger in tension and compression than H beams but H beams are stronger in motors with poor rod/stroke ratios that place more bending stress on the beam of the rod. Does this sound correct.

Anyone hve any input....

Thats is correct just look at the placement of the beam it explains it all
(A stock gm rod is good to 7000 as long as they have been taken care of and not been hot

Tension and compression strength should be relatively close depending on the metallurgy and the cross sectional area.

7000 with relatively low compression, in a 350. I have a 327 that I spin about 7300 with stock rods, but it has light pistons and only about 10.5:1, it still makes me cringe if I think about it.
