cl2 is correct. cat, prowler, most scat and others are made in china. they seem to be decent pieces.

i've got one of the cat fluid dampners on my street car and it's a rough looking piece. it's chrome, but the machine work is rough. the highest quality balancers i've found are made in australia under the romac name brand. as good as or better than anything made in the good old USA. australians don't mess around....they make some very nice timing chain gears too.

I've got a friend who's been runnin a Cat crank and rods in a 383 for 2 seasons with no problems. Make sure you balance the assembly, you should be good to go.

I talked to a rep at Manley last year and he was telling me that all H-beam rods are casted in china, even manleys. I think the exception to this would be crower,carrillo,dyers, top names like this. These chinese rods have a letter grading system to them, "A" thru "E" with "A" being the premimum and "E" the bottom of the barrel. Of course he told me that Manley rods were an "A" quality, Eagle rods a "B" and the CAT's an "E", bottom of the barrel. I lost a complete engine (only eight nights on it) with CAT rods, but i'm not sure if the rod broke first or the rod bolt. Needless to say, I WILL NOT USE ANOTHER CAT PART AGAIN, whether it be a crank or rods.

I have heard that your rods will need to be resized and the crank journal sizes, when measured, will vary somewhat. But, as you can see, some people run CAT stuff w/ no problems. It's the same story w/ Eagle and Scat stuff, some people hate'em others swear by'em. Sorry I didn't help very much.

Racer14K is correct . This "Made in China" stuff that's being flooded into the USA is pure junk . If you have ever reconditioned a set of any of the above mentioned rod's , you will find that the material they are made from is so cheap , and so soft , that you will actually load up your honing stone's in a few strokes . The same thing goes with the Chinese crank's . They are VERY soft , and made from an inferior grade of Chrome Molly . Try drilling a hole in one of the counter weight's on a Chinese crank ! You will find that they drill like butter !! Try the same thing on an American made crank , especially a Bryant or Callies , and you will be sharpening your drill bit about every 1/8" of depth . I can't give you an answer about the rocker's because I don't use any of these , but I would guess that like the other Chinese part's , these will have inferior bearing's , roller tip's , and bodies .

Funny story about a Manley Rep . This rep came to our business , trying to push his "great" rod's on us . He brought a rod that had supposedly been in a sprint car that had spun a rod bearing . He told us how great his rod was , since it was blue and not broken . My dad asked him if it was cracked , and he said no . So my dad asked him if he would like to make a small wager ...... of course he accepted , believing in the "great" Manley rod he was holding in his hand . My dad took him and his rod back to our wet mag machine , and proceeded to show him under the black light , several major crack's ! I guess you had to be there , but it was a riot watching this guy try to explain why a Manley Rep. would be carrying around a cracked Chinese rod , telling everyone that they should quit using Carrillo's and Crower's . Needless to say .... that was the last Manley Rep. that we ever saw . In the past 13 or 14 year's , I have NEVER seen a set of Chinese rod's , that have been run , that did not have at least 1 cracked rod in the set .

ok guys, for what it's worth......i have a scat 3.85 stroke ford crank made in china with stock rods and HEAVY TRW forged pistons making around 500-550hp. ran it 5 races and it spun a bearing and kicked out a rod. my fault...i was trying to turn it 7800. i had the crank welded, ground .010 under, put 2 rods, one piston and 2 valves in it and changed the gear to turn 6600. it stayed together for 26 races. i tore it down for a rebuild and the bearings looked new. it made 9 more races before the season ended and everything still looks good.

i might add that ford is using scat cranks in all their 351W service shortblocks.

you had the crank welded to build up a journal?i never use welded cranks in any race engine,you are lucky it lasted as long as it did.

yep, i had the journal welded up to add enough material so it could be re-ground. it's not something you can do with your mig. it has to be done by someone that knows what they're doing and it's not all that uncommon. 35 races on it and counting............
