i just got a compression tester. i know that it goes in to the spark plug holes. how do i check the compression? with the motor running or off?? Also is there any special order to go in? thanks alot!

take all of the spark plugs out so the motor turns freely then test each on and right the number down it doesnt matter what order you go in just so you right the reading down for that cyl so anyway no you dont run the motor

Like BK19 said, but make sure your ignition is disabled or coil wire is grounded. Block or wire throttle plates open. Remember, the reading you get with this type of tester depends a whole lot on when the exhaust valve closes, so large cams may show low readings. Look more at the spread between cylinders, not the absolute reading. Turn over engine, watch gage until it does not go higher. It will take 4-5 compression strokes for each cylinder.

We bring the engine up to running temp then shut off and pull plugs.....then we run each cylinder. Like mentioned above we look at comparison of cylinders and also look at leakoff. Dirt-Tracker
