Are you running a power valve? If so is it the correct one for the engine vacuum?

Sometimes the wrong size squirters in the carb will do that also.

Does fuel squirt out squirters in a pretty good stream with engine not running? If not it's probably just in accelerator pump circuit. Bowl gasket may be obstructing squirter circuit. Also could be the plastic cam that actuates the pump, linkage may be worn down or broke.

Also check your air bleeds for obstructions. When was the last time the carb was taken apart, cleaned, and checked for wear? This is especially important on an alky carb if you don't run gasoline through it before storage. The alky corrodes the insides, leaving a residue that can muck things up.

All good posts and ideas above. I have to agree that it sounds most likely to be a case of fuel starvation due to internal blockage from fuel deposits from the alky.
The carb probably needs a full rebuild and restoration, more than just new gaskets and simple spray cleaning can do.

Hope ya find it soon, since it's not healthy to be running an alky motor out of fuel while at racing speeds....

Be careful here, i had this same problem and chased it for three or 4 weeks. We put different peoples carbs, all new lines, wires, dist, etc.....

It turned out we had blown a head gasket between 3 and 5 and we ruined a head, and a block.

It did the exact same thing, it wouldnt go, then it would take off. It finally quit running like that and started missing.

Im definately no engine man, but unless you find something real obvious I would pull my heads off and look at everything!

Best of luck to ya!

Filter,filter.....oh ya did i mention filter?

I agree 14. I had a post on here and was looking too hard for somthing big and it was my fuel filter. The thing I learned was don't over look the small things. It's the small things that kill ya. My filter came on the car when I baught it. When they changed the filter last time they did not put the spring in it. That was causing the filter to move and cut off fuel suply. Check that filter!!
