I would start with it pretty much centered in the car or a little to the left side. try to keep it inline with the frame but check to make sure it doest hit the cage tubes behind the driver when the suspension goes through travel.
For preload i would start with a 1/4" and go from there.

I will assume you have the combination driveshaft loop/pullbar mount. I would mount it to the left side with a 3/4" or so bushing between the mount and the heim. Or you can get the adjustable bolt that goes all the way across and then you can put it anywhere you want. Then run it straight back to the rearend and again make sure it clears all the cage bars by the cockpit.

From center moving it towards the right tire will loosen under throttle coming off corner and towards the left will tighten.
