you need the support bearing. it's one of the reasons a ford 9" is so strong. try to limit the amount of grinding in this area. you don't need much clearance for the ring gear. if you continue having problems, look for a ring and pinion set that has an angle cut into the ring gear to help with clearance.

Outlaw has it right. I used to run gears that steep in street stocks all the time and never had problems. I only ground away a minimum amount to clear the ring gear and never busted out the pinion support bearing. Personally I wouldn't even think of using a housing with a partially bused pinion support.
