I have always run alcohol in IMCA modifieds,
but...I've noticed that many late models and a number of fast modifieds are changing over to gasoline as the racing fuel of choice.
What gives????

you burn less fuel so you don't lose the tail weight as bad as you do with alky

gasoline is also easier on the engine. you see a lot more blown up alky engines than gasoline. a gasoline engine will last longer and the performance advantage of alcohol is minimal, in my opinion.

I've always thought that you could make more power with alcohol than gasoline, which makes it a good choice when running stock parts.

Alky gives a 10% power advantage, burns cleaner, when everything is right. Alky burns slower so it has a soft explosion, so it hits the piston like a mallet not a hammer. The alky flame is much cooler, engines run cooler.
Alky is a junk by-product that has limited value in the chemical marketplace.

I think alcohol is easier to make more torque/HP but a well thougth out gas motor can do the same. Also as the engines have gotten better and more efficient with better heads and cams, etc. the alcohol doesnt make as much difference as it woudl on a more 'stock' motor. Plus with the limited tire we have to run gas doesnt have the burst of torque the alky does, its smoother to drive, especially with high HP/ slick track combos. I love running alcohol and not having to worry about over heating but a well set up gas motor will be fine. Get fuel ratio right and a good radiator and water pump setup and an oil cooler never hurt either and should be fine. WE too are making the switch to gas this year after hearing several others talk about how much easier it is to drive.

Zeroracing you seem to have alot of knowledge about most things. What ratio pully system should I run with alky reduction or 1-1. Whats the difference? Thanks for any input.

i use a 3" crank pulley and a 6" water pump pulley on gas. 550+ HP and no overheating problems unless it sits idling for a long time under a red or something......and that's easy to compensate for.....just bring the idle up a little with your right foot under a red. i also use the big 19"x31" 2 core aluminum radiator though.

Follow the money! Most big paying races are extended laps. When was the time you say a fuel company that sells alcohol sponsor a race or sanctioning body?

I would much rather drink alcohol and I use peer pressure to get my car to drink it, too.

i talked to a mlra guy last night and he said he is not getting much better gas milage with gas over alky, but he only looses 5 hp with the gas, they are trying to figure out why he burns so much.
