I have also had a hard time with the 4-link and z-link i added rear steer a 1/2 inch made a big differce

Zero is right you have to be careful when adding rear steer i run a 1/2 thats what i like everybody is differt i also run a straight bar but i also like the j-bar when it gets slick i like the side bite with the j-bar and the left rear with the spring behind takes care of the bite off the corner i run a 225 lr rr 200 to 175 lf 700 rf 650 If the car is loose off i go to a 175 if loose on entry i go a 200 on the right rear. 1050 pullbar spring

Do you lenghthen the upper bar when you move it on the birdcage

i would adjust it to keep your wheelbase the same otherwise it would pull the top of the birdcage toward the front of the car and that would change your wheelbase,so i think you should adjust the upper link so that the wheelbase will not change.
