Author Topic:   Powerglide transmission problem?
posted March 28, 2004 03:47 PM
I have a TCI PG in my IMCA stock car. I bought it used with supposedly only a few night on it.

I has worked fine until just before loading on the trailer for last night race.

I currently appears to have NO gears forward or reverse. It will slightly lunge when shifting to a gear from park but barely noticeable.

Any ideas on what might be going on here?

I know absolutely nothing about auto trannys.

We did pull the pan off the transmission and see no glaringly obvious problem.

Can the valve-body unit go bad and cause this?

Anything to check before I pull it from the car?

A pressure test on the low servo in your case would be a help before you pull the trans. If you have pressure then you may have mechanical problems. If there is no pressure, or very little, with no material in your pan, or no burnt fluid, you may have blown out the valve body gasket at the pump inlet and outlet. I may take you up on that offer to call, since I have no idea how to test the pressure.

The fluid was perfect.

We've broken the shifter assembly on ours about 3-4 times. The little engagement pawl that's on the insde of the trans on the selector shaft. It seems alot of people like to tighten the little 3/16" bolt too tight and it breaks the steel pawl over time. All of ours have now been welded to reinforce the area where they were breaking. If the shifter has no resistance at all, this could be your problem.

Powerglides... A local guy looked at it last night and he though it was probably the front pump also.
