Thare are alot of variables. is it a drop out unit or dose it have a inspection cover. either way taking it apart to inspect is not to diffacult. Just dont remove the bearing caps, unless you know what your doing.check for a lose cross pin or sloppy axel spline mating. on some ocassions I have seen the pinion nut get lose. be carefull not to over tighten if it is.

Sounds like a bearing has failed,either a side carrier bearing or the rear pinion bearing.If the gear is ok you may get away with just putting in a new bearing.A 8.2 rear is an oldie they quit making these in 1970,i ran a BOP style with bolt in axles for a long time.
