are you sure he welded the pin? because how would you even change an axle ,if just the spiders are welded you should still be able to change gears

If you work on the handling of the car
you will be able to get more speed as that
will allow you to carry more rpms into the corner thus allowing you to carry more rpms
at the end of the straight. you can run
a smaller diameter tire. as far as motor
and gearing I would look at the carb tuning.

that's not enuf gear,we always ran around a 6.00 gear on a big 3/8 mile(3/8 around the bottom) that would take around a 3.90 gear and 1.52 second th350,if you're turning 6200 you must be slipping somewhere.

on a 3/8 mile track you should have about a 5.30:1 to a 5.90:1 final drive .
right now you have a 4.68:1
even if the previos owner welded everything up solid you should take some time fix it put some gear to it and work on the handling.
i,ve been down that road .
hope this helps

There's not enough gear in it.
A extenal balanced motor should be around a 6.00 final drive.
A internal balanced motor I would be in the 6.20 to 6.33 final area.

A external balance motor, keep it down some and use the torque.
An internal, crank it up and use the RPM'S.

We really need to know the motor to really help with the gear choice.
Being in the street stock section and not the hobby I would assume you have some money tired up in the motor.

my final drive is 6.93 at boone which is a 3/8 high banked track. most guys run between 6.50 to 7.00. just my 2 cents worth.

You know when you have had a good night dirt racing when you jump in the shower and the tub is muddy brown for the first 10 minutes.

I run a medium banked 3/8 and last year with 91 inch tires on the right and 88 on the left I was runnin a th350 in first gear with a 3.08 and turnin about 6200-6400 depended on track conditions... this year am gonna try a 3speed standart....

something to keep in mind is that everyones definition of a 3/8 mile is different. Some are 1/2's and some are 1/4's. 02$.
