The spring rate will dictate how soft you want to be on the contact patch of the tire. When the track is tacky, you will want more spring rate to get the car to dig in faster, and a softer setup on the slick track which will help traction. If you preload a spring, your adding spring rate. You are only going to get a certain amount of pressure on that spring, if you change to a lighter spring, your just telling your suspension that you want it to rotate farther until it gets to that same rate.
