What is the lightest power steering box available to run on an imca modified? I thought a Buick Grand National box would be it, but it is just as heavy as other boxes I've seen. I've heard about a Chevy S-10 box, but I haven't seen one and I don't know what year truck. Does anyone out there know what is the lightest box?

Yeah, the snap ring boxes are supposed to be about five pounds lighter, but are weaker. Is this Jared? Are we gonna see a orange 01 Mod next year? P.S. The only snap ring box I ever had, was one off of a metric malibu.

i have a botha buick grand national and a monte ss. all metric cars had the same size steering box although some are longer than the others, but there are only 2 types you can get big and small other than that they are all the same between all the metric cars, regal monte sutlass grand prix malibu.

The 605 boxes are out of an el camino, and are what Harris uses. They are very light and very easy to rebuild. Please don't pay the outragous price Harris offers these boxes for. If you have a junk yard man that is knowledgeable, he should have no problem finding one. Make sure to keep a spare though, as mentioned before, the main gear shaft bends (or twists) very easily.

I have ran them in the past, the 605 gear box is hard to find anymore, and YES they do brake easier than others, I went back to the other metric boxes simply because they last longer. They both cost the same, i would go thru 2-3 605 boxes a season. For the cost, you don't save alot in weight with 605 box.

Jeep Cherokee Z box is a perfect fit, I'll weigh one and post the lbs. They dont break either.

I thought I had read at one time that the steering boxes with the round ring retainer were a variable ratio. This was to decrease the feel of oversteer on a street vehicle while turning. Is this right or wrong and would this affect the steering feel and actual steering in a racecar application?

WHAT ABOUT LIGHTENING THE HEAVIER BOXES? LOOKS LIKE THERE IS A LOT OF MATERIAL HERE THAT COULD BE REMOVED. HAS ANYONE TRIED TO DO THIS?

I don't believe it's legal in IMCA to lighten the steering boxes. I'm not too sure It'd be safe, either.
