I have 2 saginaw 3-speeds that I picked up recently. I know there are 2 or 3 variations in gear ratios. how can I tell which ratio's mine tranny's have? I'd like to have one with a 1.68 second gear because I'll probably be running a GM 10 bolt with 3.73's.
thanks-Arkie

Try this link.... http://www.tsinternet.com/racersguide/recordkeeping/trans_ratios.html

It lists them all based on the # of "lines" or grooves (forgive me for not knowing WHERE these lines are, tho, I'm a carb guy! LOL!).

Maybe it's grooves in the input shafts?...

Someone else wanna help me out here?

KPLugnut.

It goes by the number of rings on the input shaft.

A Saginaw 3 speed came with these variations:
(These are the lines on the input shaft):

No lines: 1st:2.85, 2nd: 1.68, 3rd: 1.00

1 line: 1st: 2.54, 2nd: 1.50, 3rd: 1.00

2 line: 1st: 3.11, 2nd: 1.84, 3rd: 1.00

3 line: 1st: 3.50, 2nd: 1.89, 3rd: 1.00

I hope that helps you out, and I hope you have what you wanted.

Well lets see if i can throw in my 2 cents worth. I just went through the same thing this week and what we did was turned the back shaft 1 full turn and counted the number of turns on the front. [in 2nd gear]if the front turns 1and a half turns then it a 1.50 if its just shy of 1and 3quarters then it prob a 1.68 and so on.I ended up with what i thought was a 1.90 but i see its a 1.89. close enough!! hope this will help u good luck!!!
